Hide Partition Icons on the Desktop in Gnome

One of the things that I’ve exploring with my Dell Mini 9 is expanding the amount of storage space that I have. This is particularly relevant as the program I wrote about the other day is going to be the focus of a presentation I need to conduct this week and it has a database over 1 GB in size.
Increasing the amount of disk space was easy. I purchased an 8GB SDHC card and formatted it with the ext2 file system which is a native Linux file system.
The one remaining issue was that an icon was on the desktop for the SDHC card. As I don’t plan on ever removing the SDHC card the icon was an unwelcome distraction.
To remove the icon I followed the “Hide Partition Icons From Your Ubuntu Desktop” post on the Tombuntu blog.
In the comments there are other techniques as well.

I was going to get a 32 gig SSD upgrade for my mini. Then the Australian dollar crashed.

Yes, an 8 GB SDHC card was as high as I was going to go. With the 16GB SSD it should be plenty of space for everything I need to do.
The SDHC really does two things:
- It gives me some extra space
- It provides a division between stuff on the laptop for general use, and somewhere for the more write intensive / presentation stuff.
