Over the weekend I installed the Ubuntu 7.10 Linux distribution also known as Gutsy Gibbon. I’ve been very impressed with it so far. I haven’t had the annoying issue I had with the previous distribution was with the NVIDIA video card drivers. For those that are curious I wrote about them in this previous post.
The stability of the system has been rock solid and I like the new visual effects. Unfortunately one side effect of the new visuals is that I’ve been experiencing this Java bug. The issue appears to be based around a problem to do with the interaction between the Java Swing components and the Compiz system.
It is especially problematic because I use the SQL Developer software from Oracle, which is written in Java, to do my development work. I plan on continuing my explorations with technology in the hopes of finding a solution.
Overall I’m very impressed with the latest release of Ubuntu, as I have been with all of the releases I’ve used.
