On Monday of this week I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the first education.au seminar for 2007, “Challenging how knowledge is created“. I plan on writing a short series of posts, each one will be on a specific idea I’ve had while thinking about the seminar.

The presentation by Jimmy Wales was excellent. Many things to think about and all presented in an easy going and informative style. Sadly there was so much content, and I’m out of practice taking notes that I hope that by the end of the seminar series there will be made available a podcast of one of his presentations.

The panel discussion after lunch was very interesting as well. Lots of different points of view about technology and access to sites such as Wikipedia. The final session we broke up into groups and discussed aspects of the day. The challenges many of the people in the room faced were quite surprising. A prominent example: how do you teach students to use new technologies effectively when they’re blocked by the institutions firewalls?

More posts to follow I promise. In the mean time check out places like Technorati and Flickr and look for the eduausem2007 tag. We were asked by the organisers to use this tag for anything we did in relation to the seminars.

  1. Hi Corey

It was great meeting you at the seminar on Monday! Sad how common that theme of firewalls was in the afternoon discussions.

    Cheers

    Kerry

  2. Kerry,

Glad to see you’ve found my blog. I hope what I’ve written so far about the seminar has been useful. It is unfortunate how often the topic of firewalls came up.

On the positive side though it was encouraging to see so many people prepared to embrace the technology.

    Corey
